Riviera is gezegend met maar liefst drie songschrijvers. Nu hoeft dat niet een zegen te zijn ? als het een stijlbreuk binnen het raamwerk van een cd oplevert ?, maar, believe me, een zegen is het bij Riviera w?l. Dit alt.countrykwintet uit Chicago, Illinois heeft in Derek Phillips, Mick Radichel en Josh Boisvert drie prima ambachtslui die een fraai liedje met ballen kunnen pennen. Riviera komt over als een hecht collectief, waarbij de componisten elkaar afwisselend de microfoon gunnen en de ruimte krijgen te soleren op gitaar of vette accenten op de keyboards te zetten. Het spreekt voor zich dat dit trio zich gesteund weet door een stevig bonkende ritmesectie. Het recept dat Riviera regelmatig toepast op At The End Of The American Century? (Glorious Noise Records) is het stapelen van elektrische gitaren op een bedje van akoestische gitaren. In de toonzettende opener Petrified Possesions laten de mannen aldus op een opzwepende manier zien wat ze in huis hebben. Riviera komt vervolgens goed los als de gitaren in stelling worden gebracht en de solo?s uitwaaieren over een heerlijk slome beat, zoals in de fraaie liedjes Somebody?s Fool en Stranded. De band rockt en rammelt, maar dan niet op een manier zoals bijvoorbeeld Slobberbone, maar eerder met een rockswagger die de jaren zeventig Stones of The Faces in herinnering roept. In een mooie productie ? met ruimte en aandacht voor alle instrumenten, inclusief rollend orgel ? toveren de vijf Riviera?s twaalf samenhangende, opzwepende en heerlijk intens rockende liedjes uit de hoge hoed. Ik heb er binnen de driehoek tussen Wilco, Richmond Fontaine en Drive-By Truckers weer een favoriet bij. (Wiebren Rijkeboer)

Riviera has been blessed with no less than three songwriters. This
doesn?t necessarily need to be a blessing ?in case it causes a
departure of style within the framework of a cd?, but, believe me, it?s
a blessing with Riviera. This alt. Country-quintet from Chicago,
Illinois has (in Derek Phillips, Mick Radichel and Josh Boisvert) three
excellent craftsmen that can pen down a pretty song with balls. Riviera
comes across as a strong collective, wherein the composers allow each
other space to use the microphone, and to solo on guitar or play fat
accents on the keyboards. It speaks for itself that this trio is being
supported with a sturdy banging rhythm section. The recipe that Riviera
applies regularly on At The End Or The American Century? (Glorious
Noise Records) is piling up electric guitars on a basis of acoustic
guitars. In the tone-setting opener Petrified Possesions the men show
in a stimulating manner what they?re able to do. Riviera then really
comes loose as the guitars get put into position and solos wave out
over a lovely lethargic beat, as in the pretty songs Somebody's Fool
and Stranded. The band rocks and rambles, but not in the same manner
such as for instance Slobberbone, but more with a rockswagger that
brings 70?s Stones or The Faces to mind. By use of a beautiful style of
production ? with space and attention for all instruments, including
rolling organ ? the five Rivieras magically pull twelve coherent,
stimulative and wonderfully intense rocking songs out of their high
hat. I?ve got a new favourite to add to the triangle of Wilco, Richmond
